IELTS on paper test tips
- From 1 May 2025, you must use a black pen (provided by the test centre) for the Listening, Reading and Writing sections. Personal stationery, including pencils, is not allowed.
- In the Listening section, you will be given ten minutes to transfer any notes onto the answer paper. You will not be given this time on the Reading or Writing sections, so make sure your answers are on the answer sheet before the time runs out.
- In the Listening and Reading sections of the test, you may only use a pencil. In the Writing section, you may use a pen or pencil.
- You will not be allowed a pencil case on your desk. If you need a sharpener, raise your hand and ask your invigilator.
