IELTS on Paper

IELTS on paper is the standard test format in Canada, with the other alternative being IELTS on computer. If you prefer writing down notes before you answer questions, or you are more comfortable with a pen than with a computer then you may be happy to hear that you can take your IELTS test on paper at a number of locations. If you choose paper-based IELTS, the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections will be completed on paper at your chosen test centre. The Speaking portion will be conducted face-to-face with a trained IELTS examiner.

IELTS on paper test tips

  • From 1 May 2025, you must use a black pen (provided by the test centre) for the Listening, Reading and Writing sections. Personal stationery, including pencils, is not allowed.
  • In the Listening section, you will be given ten minutes to transfer any notes onto the answer paper. You will not be given this time on the Reading or Writing sections, so make sure your answers are on the answer sheet before the time runs out.
  • In the Listening and Reading sections of the test, you may only use a pencil. In the Writing section, you may use a pen or pencil.
  • You will not be allowed a pencil case on your desk. If you need a sharpener, raise your hand and ask your invigilator.
