English for everyone: studying for the IELTS exam

Did you know that English is spoken by around 90% of Canadians, while approximately 60% of them speak French? This means that it is important to be proficient in English to adapt to life in this country.

Besides knowing the language, it is essential to take a certification exam, such as the IELTS, because:

  • Certain professions in Canada require individuals to showcase their proficiency in the English language as a part of their licensing process.
  • In case you wish to pursue further education or apply to a Canadian educational institution, they will ask you to present proof of your English language proficiency.
  • Some employers in Canada demand candidates to provide evidence of their English language skills through standardized tests such as IELTS.
  • If you are already living in Canada and are applying for permanent residency or citizenship, you might be required to provide proof of your language proficiency.

Even if you have a good domain of the English language, you must know that the IELTS exam requires proper preparation to obtain the desired score. That is why we will give you some tips to study, while you strengthen concepts.

1. Utilize technology

Leverage technology to your advantage. There are numerous language learning apps and online platforms designed to make learning English, as well as preparing for the IELTS exam, interactive and engaging. Here are some useful resources:

  • Practice tests that will serve you to build your confidence, get familiar with the test format and real conditions (timing, the types of questions, etc.).
  • If you take the IELTS exam with the British Council, you can also access IELTS Ready Premium, a free and unlimited tool, to study at your own pace. You will have more than 40 practice tests, question-and-answer models, feedback, advice, and exercises, among others.
  • Online platforms offer opportunities to connect with language instructors who can provide personalized feedback on your written and spoken English. Constructive criticism is a powerful tool for improvement. For example, you could try IELTS practice online, 1-1 tutoring, and the preparation course.

2. Try a practical approach to the language

Reviewing your English knowledge and preparing for the IELTS exam doesn’t have to be confined to textbooks and grammar drills.

One of the main approaches of the “English for everyone” concept is immersing yourself in practical learning by watching English movies, and TV shows, or listening to podcasts. You will see that this is so much easier if you have previous knowledge.

By making English a part of your daily routine, you’ll naturally enhance your language skills and become more comfortable with the nuances of the language.

This not only enhances your skills but also exposes you to different accents and colloquial expressions, preparing you for real-life scenarios. It won’t replace taking classes or official preparation material but will be a great complement to those tools.

3. English for everyone is setting realistic and achievable goals

Instead of overwhelming yourself with the thought of mastering English overnight, set realistic and achievable goals. Break down your language-learning journey into manageable milestones.

For instance, focus on mastering specific topics or skills each week. This will make the learning process less intimidating and provide a sense of accomplishment as you steadily progress.

You can create a structured study plan that incorporates all aspects of the IELTS test – listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Allocate specific time slots for each skill and ensure that your plan covers all the necessary content. Consistency is key, so stick to your schedule and adjust it as needed based on your progress.

4. Enhance time management skills

The IELTS exam is not only a test of language proficiency but also of time management. Develop strategies to efficiently allocate your time during the exam. Practice completing tasks within the given time limits to build confidence and minimize stress on the exam day.

Please note that you will have two hours and 40 minutes to complete the exam. Reading will take 60 minutes, as well as writing. On the other hand, listening takes approximately 30 minutes, while speaking lasts between 10 and 15 minutes.

5. Improve writing skills

Improving your English writing skills is crucial for effective communication and succeeding in the IELTS exam. Practice writing essays, reports, and letters regularly.

Seek feedback from teachers, peers, or online communities to refine your writing style. Consistent practice not only improves your performance in the exam but also enhances your overall skills.

6. Immerse yourself in English literature

Reading is a powerful tool for enhancing vocabulary and comprehension skills. Don’t try to understand every single word of the text because it will be overwhelming.

Remember that you can infer some things from the context. However, if you really want to expand your knowledge, you can look for the terms that are unfamiliar to you in the dictionary (eReaders also provide interesting options).

Choose a variety of materials, including newspapers, novels, and academic articles, to expose yourself to different writing styles and topics. This not only broadens your language skills but also prepares you for the diverse content you might encounter in the IELTS exam.

7. Engage in conversations

Improving your speaking skills is essential for success in the IELTS exam. Engage in conversations with native speakers or language exchange partners. This not only provides valuable speaking practice but also helps you gain confidence in expressing yourself in English.

Consider joining forums or language exchange groups to connect with individuals who share your language-learning goals. For example, you can take a face-to-face IELTS preparation course to access seminars and webinars, as well as interact with other students.

Remember that this communication ability is key to success not only in the test but also in adapting to everyday life.

8. Create a supportive learning environment

Surround yourself with a positive and supportive learning environment. Partner with fellow IELTS aspirants to share tips and experiences

Collaborative learning not only fosters a sense of community but also provides additional motivation and encouragement. This will be also useful to practice your proficiency even if you are not taking an exam.

9. Practice regularly with mock tests

For those preparing for the IELTS, regular practice with mock tests is essential. Familiarize yourself with the exam format, time constraints, and question types.

This not only boosts your confidence but also helps you identify areas that need improvement, allowing for targeted study sessions.

10. Seek constructive feedback

While self-study is crucial, seeking feedback from experienced tutors or language experts can provide valuable insights into your strengths and weaknesses.

Now you know that English is for everyone! With these tips you will enhance your knowledge and have a route to follow for the preparation of the IELTS exam
