Free online IELTS practice tests

British Council has plenty of free IELTS practice tests available online. You can take them as many times as you need to build your confidence, practice your English and get used to the test format, so you feel ready for the real exam.

The IELTS online practice tests include both the questions and the answers so that you can take the test as you would on the day, then mark how well you did afterwards. Recreate the exam conditions with time restrictions allocated to each section (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening), so that you are more prepared for the exam conditions on the day.

Why should I take IELTS mock tests before my exam?

  • To feel more comfortable with the test format and timed conditions when it comes to the day of your exam.
  • To get used to the types of questions being asked and key words to look out for.
  • To assess your band scores before the exam, so that you can try to improve it through study.
  • To assess which areas of the exam are your weaker ones and put more effort into preparing for these.
  • To immerse yourself in the English language ahead of your exam.

IELTS Online Practice Tests

We have IELTS mock tests available for each area of the IELTS exam, so that you can practice your Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Your overall band score at the end of the test will be an average of your score across all four areas, so it’s worth practicing all of them to get the best possible score in each.
